SUMMARY:VAWS - Introducing NISAR: NASA's Biggest Earth Observation Mission
DESCRIPTION:PDF Presentation Slides\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Franz Meyer\, Professor\, UAF Geophysical Institute\, Chief Scientist\, Alaska Satellite Facility \n\n\n\nAbout the webinar: Some of the recent earthquakes in Alaska and across the globe showed us how violently Earth can sometimes move under our feet. In July 2025\, NASA\, in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization\, launched the NISAR satellite mission that will allow us to monitor such events at unprecedented accuracy\, helping us better understand many of the natural hazards that affect Alaskans daily. \n\n\n\nNISAR will revolutionize how we monitor Earth. It will be able to monitor volcanoes\, glaciers\, sea ice\, forests\, and seismic zones independent of weather and daylight conditions. NISAR’s instruments will be able to measure movements of Earth down to a centimeter accuracy\, an incredible feat for a sensor orbiting more than 800 kilometers away. NISAR will collect more free-and-open data than NASA currently holds in all of its archives. \n\n\n\nIn addition to an overview of NISAR itself\, this talk will also highlight Alaska’s important role in this mission. Working closely with NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, UAF’s Alaska Satellite Facility downlinks\, archives\, and distributes NISAR’s data to an international audience of scientists and decision-makers\, all right here from Alaska. Supported by its talented local staff\, this will make ASF one of the world’s leading data centers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio: Meyer has more than 25 years of experience in the theory and application of radar remote sensing. He has been teaching radar remote sensing-related topics since 2000. He has been the PI of several successful research projects funded by NASA\, NGA\, private industry\, and the European Union. Meyer has published more than 150 publications\, five of which received best paper awards. He was awarded the IEEE GRSS GOLD Early Career award in 2011\, the Terris and Katrina Moore Prize in 2014\, a NASA/USAID SERVIR Collaboration Award in 2019\, the IEEE GRSS Education Award in 2024\, and the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Research Award in 2025. He holds chair or Co-Chair positions in IEEE GRSS\, ISPRS\, IGS\, and EarthScope. He is the Chief Scientist of the Alaska Satellite Facility\, a current Science Team Member of the NASA-ISRO SAR mission NISAR\, and a Project Science Team member of the JPL OPERA project.

SUMMARY:VAWS: Introduction to the Metop-SG constellation and METImage
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Curtis Seaman\, Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere \n\n\n\nThe first satellite of the next-generation polar-orbiting satellite program developed by the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) is currently scheduled to launch in August 2025. This upcoming constellation of satellites is known as Metop-Second Generation (Metop-SG)\, and the first satellite to be launched is Metop-SG-A1. Thanks to an international partnership known as the Initial Joint Polar-orbiting System (IJPS)\, NOAA is planning to acquire and distribute this data to the user community in a manner similar to the data provided by NOAA’s Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). One of the new instruments to be flown in this constellation is METImage\, an optical imager with many similarities to VIIRS and MODIS. This talk will provide an overview of the Metop-SG constellation\, and will preview the capabilities of its new imager\, METImage\, with a focus on similarities and differences with VIIRS as well as some new capabilities that will be available on NOAA’s future generation geostationary satellite program\, GeoXO. \n\n\n\nPresentation PDFDownload

SUMMARY:Ahtna Place Names for officially unnamed features in and around Glacial Lake Atna
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: James Kari\, Emeritus\, Alaska Native Language Center \n\n\n\nKari’s 2019 article presents geolinguistic evidence that a group of about 20 names called “The Nen’ Yese’ Ensemble” were coined by eyewitnesses to the Susitna R-Copper R drainage shift in the first half of the 11th millennium. Kari is preparing a selection 17 Ahtna place names for unnamed features as a batch place name submission. Six of the names are in the Tyone River area. Other names can be viewed along the surrounding highway system. The batch name proposal can be time-effective and informative for various state and federal agencies\, for Ahtna Inc. and the local Ahtna communities\, or for researchers who specialize in the Alaska landscape. Learning how to say and to analyze some these names can be rewarding as well. \n\n\n\nPresentation PDFDownload

SUMMARY:Green-up in the Alaska Boreal Forest
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Rick Thoman (Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy)\, Jan Dawe (OneTree) and Susan Harry (University of Alaska Fairbanks) \n\n\n\nSpring in Alaska means important happenings in the boreal forest. Sap starts flowing in birch trees\, leading to tapping and turning the sap into delicious treats. Green-up\, when leaves burst forth from Alaska’s deciduous trees\, has important implications for the seasonal ecology\, society and even meteorology in the state. It is rapidly followed by pollen release\, which is a health issue for many Alaskans. Fairbanks has a unique multi-decadal record of green-up dates that’s been used to develop a technique for forecasting green-up and related events in the Interior and more broadly in the boreal forest regions in Alaska. This webinar will be the sixth annual review of the green-up forecasting tools and will provide a look-ahead at green-up for Spring 2025. One Tree will demonstrate citizen science-outreach tools for birch tappers and others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoman’s Climate and Weather slidesDownload\n\n\n\nJan Dawe’s Sap SlidesDownload\n\n\n\nSusan Harry’s Pollen SlidesDownload

SUMMARY:Ocean Acidification Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Darcy Dugan (Director of Alaska’s Ocean Acidification Network) & Natalie Monacci (Director of the Ocean Acidification Research Center\, University of Alaska Fairbanks) \n\n\n\nOcean acidification is a growing topic of interest and concern for Alaska communities. Alaska has been identified as a hotspot\, and the effects of ocean acidification are likely to have serious implications for fisheries\, food security and the economy. Researchers with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are monitoring ocean acidification in coastal waters around Alaska\, and are also exploring ecological and socio-economic impacts. In recent years\, Tribes\, coastal communities and industry groups have joined the monitoring effort. The Alaska Ocean Acidification Network brings together these diverse entities and more to share and expand the understanding of ocean acidification processes and consequences\, as well as explore potential adaptation and mitigation strategies. These conversations include “what is the data telling us and how can it help to inform local community decisions?” This presentation will include a refresher on ocean acidification\, the primary information needs voiced by Alaskans\, and what we’ve learned from recent research and monitoring about conditions and species response. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresentation SlidesDownload
