But how do users access the data online? This presentation will primarily focus on the CIRA SLIDER – JPSS Northern Hemisphere sector\, which has been available for users to access near-real-time satellite imagery online for several years. An online demonstration of the web application will be provided. Additionally\, JPSS training resources and materials will also be showcased to assist users in the interpretation of the imagery and products. \n\n\n\nThe VIIRS Blowing Snow RGB captures swaths of blowing snow across northwestern Alaska on 9 March 2026.\n\n\n\nBio: Torres is an RA3: JPSS Satellite Liaison who works at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA)\, collocated with Colorado State University (CSU). Torres liaisons between the National Weather Service (NWS) user community and research/training communities and focuses on JPSS products\, applications\, data access\, satellite training development\, and the collection of user feedback.

She will highlight how organizations such as the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys\, the U.S. Geological Survey\, the National Weather Service\, and the Alaska Ocean Observing System\, alongside Indigenous Knowledge holders and community residents\, are turning available data into forecasts\, flood inundation tools\, and post storm recovery resources. Sandy will also discuss the persistent observational gaps that limit early warning lead times and long-term planning\, and the priority actions identified through engagement with coastal flooding experts to help sustain and expand these critical capabilities. This webinar highlights what Alaskans are accomplishing with existing tools and explores the specific investments experts say would make the biggest difference. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Sandy Starkweather is the Executive Director of the US Arctic Observing Network\, bringing together her engineering\, Arctic climatology\, and science policy expertise to build stronger collaborations among all those who benefit from sustained Arctic observing. DESCRIPTION:Download Webinar Transcript\n\n\n\nSpeakers: Benjamin Jones (Research Associate Professor) and Phillip Wilson (Research Professional) with the Institute of Northern Engineering\, University of Alaska Fairbanks  \n\n\n\nAbout the Webinar: COAST-X (Collaborative Observations of the Arctic Shorezone: A Traverse for Knowledge Exchange) 2026 was a 1\,986-mile snowmachine traverse along Alaska’s western and northern coasts\, linking more than a dozen communities from the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta to Utqiaġvik. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Benjamin and Phillip will share reflections and observations from the 19-day Spring 2026 traverse\, which brought together field observations\, community engagement\, and lived experience on the land and sea ice. Traveling over snow\, sea ice\, frozen lakes and rivers\, and tundra\, they discussed coastal erosion\, permafrost thaw\, sea ice conditions\, and changing travel routes with tribal councils\, corporation board members\, educators\, students\, and community members along the way. Through these conversations\, they learned directly from residents about local priorities and pressing environmental change issues. This presentation will be informal and story-driven\, featuring photos\, field experiences\, and discussion of how COAST-X contributes to building stronger connections between UAF research\, communities\, and coastal resilience efforts across Alaska. \n\n\n\nCOAST-X was designed not as a single field campaign\, but as a mobile platform for knowledge exchange—connecting places facing similar coastal challenges and creating space for dialogue among researchers\, residents\, and decision-makers. We will highlight key insights from the traverse\, including: \n\n\n\n\nObservations and stories documenting rapidly changing Arctic coastal systems\n\n\n\nCommunity perspectives on erosion\, permafrost thaw\, and infrastructure impacts\n\n\n\nLessons learned from self-sufficient\, long-distance winter travel and field logistics\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBenjamin Jones is a Research Associate Professor at the Institute of Northern Engineering\, University of Alaska Fairbanks. A geographer by training\, his work focuses on Arctic coastal systems\, permafrost\, and environmental change. He has over 25 years of experience working across Alaska’s Arctic and sub-Arctic\, collaborating closely with coastal communities to document change and its implications for travel\, safety\, and infrastructure. SUMMARY:VAWS - Application of the NOAA Next Generation Fire System for Improved Wildfire Detection and Monitoring in Alaska
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Michael Pavolonis\, NESDIS Wildland Fire Program Manager \n\n\n\nAbout the webinar: The NOAA Next Generation Fire System (NGFS) automatically extracts actionable fire intelligence from low Earth orbit and geostationary satellite observations\, aligning directly with operational decision-making. Relative to legacy methods\, the NGFS is designed to detect fires earlier and provide more robust monitoring intelligence\, including enhanced resilience against cloud and smoke obstructions. The unique event data model employed by the NGFS enables new applications\, such as fire ignition notifications\, which will be demonstrated during the upcoming Alaska wildfire season. The demonstration of the NGFS in Alaska is made possible through close collaboration with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA)\, which provides a low-latency data-processing and distribution pipeline\, remote sensing expertise\, and a deep understanding of Alaska’s unique wildfire stakeholder needs. This presentation will provide an overview of the NGFS and planned activities for the 2026 Alaska fire season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio: Michael Pavolonis is the NOAA National Environmental Satellite\, Data\, and Information Service (NESDIS) Wildland Fire Program manager. He earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from the University of Wisconsin. He also holds a B.S. degree in Meteorology from Penn State and an M.S. degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from the University of Wisconsin. Sap starts flowing in birch trees\, leading to tapping and turning the sap into delicious treats. It is rapidly followed by pollen release\, which is a health issue for many Alaskans. Fairbanks has a unique multi-decadal record of green-up dates that’s been used to develop a technique for forecasting green-up and related events in the Interior and more broadly in the boreal forest regions in Alaska. This webinar will be the seventh annual review of the green-up forecasting tools and will provide a look-ahead at green-up for Spring 2026. One Tree will demonstrate citizen science-outreach tools for birch tappers and others.

Satellite imagery and other products address needs for detecting and monitoring weather and environmental conditions and for improving forecasts that help mitigate the risks posed by hazards\, including extreme cold\, high winds\, wildfires\, changing sea ice conditions\, storms\, and both coastal and inland flooding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBios: Amy Stevermer is a scientist and program lead at UCAR/COMET. She is involved in efforts to develop e-learning across multiple Earth system science topics and is committed to expanding overall environmental and science literacy for audiences from local to global. DESCRIPTION:PDF of Presentation Slides\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Thomas Farrugia\, Scientific Program Manager\, AOOS\, Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom Network Coordinator \n\n\n\nAbout the webinar: Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Alaska can produce toxins that move through the marine food web and make certain food items dangerous to consume. For many coastal communities that rely on wild harvested marine foods – such as shellfish\, fish\, seabirds\, and marine mammals – HABs present a threat to food security. In addition\, we are learning that this threat is likely to increase in the future and is an emergent threat in Arctic communities. This presentation will go through how HABs form in Alaskan waters\, the conditions that are conducive to HAB formation\, how HABs are currently being monitored and researched\, and what more needs to be done to better mitigate this threat. We will also discuss how recent and predicted future changes in the oceans could affect the distribution\, intensity\, and species composition of HABs in Alaska. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio: Thomas is a marine ecologist who joined the Alaska Ocean Observing System in 2020 as the first Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom (AHAB) Network Coordinator. After a B.S. in Biology at McGill University\, he spent a year as a fisheries observer in the Bering Sea\, where he developed an affinity for Alaska and its waters. He obtained his M.S. in Marine Biology at California State University Long Beach\, before returning to Alaska for his Ph.D. in Fisheries at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He then worked as a stock assessment scientist for the Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic and as a white shark researcher for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Thomas is very excited to be back in Alaska coordinating the awareness\, monitoring\, research\, and response to HABs – a crucial issue impacting public health\, food safety and security\, and wildlife populations.

SUMMARY:LEO Network – Helping to Understand Environmental Vulnerability and Change
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mike Brubaker\, Director\, Community Environment and Health\, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium \n\n\n\nThe Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network was originally developed as a tele-consultation tool\, to provide referrals on questions related to wildlife\, plant\, weather or community change. It is only in recent years that the platform has been applied to describe broader trends. This presentation will explore how to use LEO Network as a measure of environmental change at the local and regional level. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Mike serves as the Director for the department of Community Environment and Health\, at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. His department includes four program areas: Environmental Health\, Emergency Preparedness\, Contaminated Sites\, and Tribal Capacity. Mike is originally from Juneau but has spent most of his life in Anchorage. He attended St. Lawrence University and graduated with a BS in Biology. Graduate study in Environmental Management followed at University of San Franciso. His career has focused on improving environmental conditions in rural communities. This started as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1990s\, surveying health infrastructure in Hungary after the collapse of communism. Upon returning to Alaska\, Mike worked on cleanup of contaminated former military sites\, before taking a job as the environmental program coordinator at the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association. Mike started at ANTHC in 2008 tasked with establishing a statwide environmental training program. His work has involved performing community assessment related to climate change impacts\, establishing the Center for Climate and Health\, and the LEO Network. He hosts the quarterly One Health Group meetings and publishes a monthly E-news entitled The Northern Climate Observer. In recent years (2023-2025)\, the outburst floods have increased in volume and caused extensive flooding and damage in the Mendenhall Valley\, the largest residential neighborhood in Juneau. This talk will discuss the dynamics of the glacier outburst flood\, including how it is evolving over time\, and how flood hazards are communicated to Juneau residents. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio: Eran Hood is a Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Alaska Southeast and is part of a team of university and agency scientists who have studied the outburst floods at Mendenhall Glacier since 2011.

Abagael works on the Rusting Rivers project\, and am a coauthor on the Rusting Rivers chapter of the 2025 Arctic Report Card. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHannah-Marie Ladd is the Program Director of the Indigenous Sentinels Network (ISN) that is operated by the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government. She leads the program in supporting a tribally owned software development to support implementing community-driven environmental and climate monitoring initiatives. ISN partners with tribal\, federal\, state\, nonprofit\, and community organizations to collect and utilize environmental data to support climate adaptation and conservation efforts in Alaska and beyond. With a background in environmental studies\, sustainability\, anthropology\, marine policy\, coordination\, and data collection\, Hannah-Marie’s work focuses on climate adaptation\, coastal resource management\, and community-led change. She brings experience in project management\, environmental research\, and fostering equitable collaborations across diverse stakeholders. SUMMARY:VAWS - Introducing NISAR: NASA's Biggest Earth Observation Mission
DESCRIPTION:PDF Presentation Slides\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Franz Meyer\, Professor\, UAF Geophysical Institute\, Chief Scientist\, Alaska Satellite Facility \n\n\n\nAbout the webinar: Some of the recent earthquakes in Alaska and across the globe showed us how violently Earth can sometimes move under our feet. In July 2025\, NASA\, in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization\, launched the NISAR satellite mission that will allow us to monitor such events at unprecedented accuracy\, helping us better understand many of the natural hazards that affect Alaskans daily. \n\n\n\nNISAR will revolutionize how we monitor Earth. It will be able to monitor volcanoes\, glaciers\, sea ice\, forests\, and seismic zones independent of weather and daylight conditions. NISAR’s instruments will be able to measure movements of Earth down to a centimeter accuracy\, an incredible feat for a sensor orbiting more than 800 kilometers away. NISAR will collect more free-and-open data than NASA currently holds in all of its archives. \n\n\n\nIn addition to an overview of NISAR itself\, this talk will also highlight Alaska’s important role in this mission. Working closely with NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, UAF’s Alaska Satellite Facility downlinks\, archives\, and distributes NISAR’s data to an international audience of scientists and decision-makers\, all right here from Alaska. Supported by its talented local staff\, this will make ASF one of the world’s leading data centers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio: Meyer has more than 25 years of experience in the theory and application of radar remote sensing. He has been teaching radar remote sensing-related topics since 2000. He has been the PI of several successful research projects funded by NASA\, NGA\, private industry\, and the European Union. Meyer has published more than 150 publications\, five of which received best paper awards. He was awarded the IEEE GRSS GOLD Early Career award in 2011\, the Terris and Katrina Moore Prize in 2014\, a NASA/USAID SERVIR Collaboration Award in 2019\, the IEEE GRSS Education Award in 2024\, and the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Research Award in 2025. He holds chair or Co-Chair positions in IEEE GRSS\, ISPRS\, IGS\, and EarthScope. He is the Chief Scientist of the Alaska Satellite Facility\, a current Science Team Member of the NASA-ISRO SAR mission NISAR\, and a Project Science Team member of the JPL OPERA project.

It will detail the analytical tools\, model guidance\, and observational networks used by meteorologists and avalanche forecasters to assess and communicate risk\, forecast confidence\, and uncertainty across Southcentral Alaska. \n\n\n\nBios: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarson Jones is a Lead Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Anchorage\, Alaska. After earning his master’s degree in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences with research focused on changing snowpack dynamics in the southern Rockies\, Carson joined the Anchorage NWS office\, where he now serves as the Avalanche Program Lead. Mik spent five years at Arapahoe Basin\, then transitioned to Alyeska. She finished her eight-year Alyeska career as the Assistant Patrol Director with her loyal co-worker and avalanche dog “Zooka.” At this time\, Mik’s summers were spent guiding and teaching sea kayaking and mountaineering for the Outward Bound School in Seward\, AK. Her career in the federal government began in 2015 working as a Ranger at Kenai Fjords National Park. Mik spent 4 years in Talkeetna employed as a Mountaineering Ranger for Denali National Park. For a decade Mik has been instructing avalanche courses for the Alaska Avalanche School. We will discuss how governance and efficient pipelines power faster\, more reliable delivery to the public—through the Alaska State Geoportal and interoperable services.
