In this ACCAP webinar\, Sandy will walk through the U.S. Arctic Observing Network’s new technical brief on coastal flooding. She will highlight how organizations such as the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys\, the U.S. Geological Survey\, the National Weather Service\, and the Alaska Ocean Observing System\, alongside Indigenous Knowledge holders and community residents\, are turning available data into forecasts\, flood inundation tools\, and post storm recovery resources. Sandy will also discuss the persistent observational gaps that limit early warning lead times and long-term planning\, and the priority actions identified through engagement with coastal flooding experts to help sustain and expand these critical capabilities. This webinar highlights what Alaskans are accomplishing with existing tools and explores the specific investments experts say would make the biggest difference. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Sandy Starkweather is the Executive Director of the US Arctic Observing Network\, bringing together her engineering\, Arctic climatology\, and science policy expertise to build stronger collaborations among all those who benefit from sustained Arctic observing. She spent twelve years conducting and supporting field research in Greenland. Sandy has also played a key role in advancing the U.S. Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee’s Arctic Research Plans. Her work centers on building the collaborations needed to make sustained Arctic observing more effective for all who depend on it.

An online demonstration of the web application will be provided. Additionally\, JPSS training resources and materials will also be showcased to assist users in the interpretation of the imagery and products. \n\n\n\nThe VIIRS Blowing Snow RGB captures swaths of blowing snow across northwestern Alaska on 9 March 2026.\n\n\n\nBio: Torres is an RA3: JPSS Satellite Liaison who works at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA)\, collocated with Colorado State University (CSU). Torres liaisons between the National Weather Service (NWS) user community and research/training communities and focuses on JPSS products\, applications\, data access\, satellite training development\, and the collection of user feedback.

SUMMARY:From Landslide to Tsunami: Tracy Arm and Alaska’s Growing Landslide Threat
DESCRIPTION:Download Webinar Transcript\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Mike West\, State Seismologist for Alaska\, Director of the Alaska Earthquake Center\, and UAF Research Professor at the Geophysical Institute \n\n\n\nEarly on August 10\, 2025\, a mountainside collapsed in Tracy Arm in Southeast Alaska\, generating a tsunami that surged up the opposite side of the fjord to heights higher than the top floor of One World Trade Center. Just 12 hours earlier\, cruise ships had departed from the same area. Boats farther down the fjord experienced smaller waves as the tsunami raced through the region at speeds exceeding 100 mph. While dramatic\, Tracy Arm is not an isolated event. As glaciers retreat and weather and climate patterns continue to change\, coastal landslides are becoming an increasingly important hazard across Alaska. This webinar will explore the Tracy Arm event and place it into the broader context of changing environmental conditions\, evolving coastal landslide risks\, and what they may mean for Alaska communities and visitors.

SUMMARY:Tracking Drought in Alaska: Developing New Indicators and Tools
DESCRIPTION:Download Webinar Transcript\n\n\n\nSpeakers: Charlie Parr\, UAF Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning (SNAP) and Rick Thoman\, Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness \n\n\n\nAlthough Alaska is often thought of as a water-rich state\, drought can have significant impacts on communities\, ecosystems\, hydropower generation\, subsistence resources\, agriculture\, wildfire\, and water supplies. In this webinar\, Charlie and Rick will introduce a new set of drought indicators developed for Alaska using ERA5-Land\, a global climate dataset that combines weather observations with computer models to provide consistent estimates of historical weather and land surface conditions. They will discuss how the indicators are generated using a repeatable process that allows them to be updated regularly over time\, their strengths and limitations\, and how they can support environmental monitoring and decision-making. They will also invite feedback from participants to help improve these tools and ensure they meet the needs of Alaska communities\, resource managers\, and other users. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlie Parr is a geospatial programmer and analyst with the Scenarios Network for Alaska & Arctic Planning (SNAP) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He develops workflows and web-based tools that transform climate and geophysical data into accessible resources for researchers\, resource managers\, and decision-makers across Alaska. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRick Thoman is a the Climate Specialist with the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness (ACCAP). Rick and has many years of experience producing reliable Alaska climate information and graphics describing Alaska’s changing environment. Yet\, the mountain is unforgiving: only about 52% of those who attempt the summit ever stand at the top\, and in particularly brutal seasons—like the tragic summer of 1992 when 11 climbers perished—Denali serves as a stark reminder of the ultimate stakes involved.  \n\n\n\nThis presentation pulls back the curtain on the high-stakes world of the National Weather Service (NWS) Fairbanks Denali Climbing Forecast. Discover the immense scientific and logistical challenges of predicting extreme weather for a massive\, remote peak where traditional data is nearly non-existent\, forcing meteorologists to rely on a sparse network of automated weather stations\, satellite soundings\, and real-time ranger dispatches. He leads scientific training and research\, integrating technological and scientific advancements into daily operations to enhance local forecasting. Evan earned a B.S. in Meteorology\, an M.S. in Water Resources\, and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Missouri. He began his NWS career in Marquette\, Michigan\, before transitioning to his current role as Fairbanks SOO in 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJason Laney is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) at the NWS in Fairbanks\, Alaska\, serving as the primary liaison between the office and the community. Jason earned his B.S. in Meteorology at the University of Louisiana in Monroe. In this presentation\, Kevin White\, a wildlife ecologist with the University of Alaska Southeast\, will talk about long-term studies describing the extraordinary natural history and population ecology of mountain goats in coastal Alaska. He will specifically focus on recent analyses seeking to understand how avalanches transform mountain landscapes and alpine wildlife populations that inhabit them. Functioning as ecologically extreme events\, avalanches can elicit substantial population declines requiring more than a generation for demographic recovery – highlighting the importance of climate-linked factors for mountain wildlife populations. The exciting multidisciplinary research involved extensive collaboration with University of Alaska snow scientists Eran Hood and Gabe Wolken\, and others from the US\, Canada and Switzerland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for Webinar\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin White is a wildlife ecologist with the University of Alaska Southeast\, Program on the Environment\, Department of Natural Sciences. He studies mountain ecology\, including how such systems are influenced by ongoing change. Based upon extensive field studies in Alaska\, his recent research has been principally focused on the role of climate\, weather and snow avalanches on the population ecology of mountain goats.
