Special ACCAP listening session on potential funding loss
May 1, 2025 @ 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm AKDT
Why are we having this listening session?
You may have heard the news, the White House plans to eliminate climate research at NOAA. ACCAP is funded entirely by NOAA’s Climate Program Office so there is a possibility that we will lose our funding and our capacity to support communities responding to extreme events and other pressures that impact lives and livelihoods.
We are holding this listening session to gather stories from people whose life, community, work, or industry would be impacted by the termination of our work. Your testimonials are vital in documenting our significance and the importance of our work to funders, UAF leadership, and others. Please join us on May 1 to share your impact stories.
Services that may go away
- Rick Thoman’s consistent availability to the media and public explaining weather and climate events so Alaskans can navigate and prepare for changing conditions — including his weekly radio broadcasts in Fairbanks and the Interior, Bethel, Dillingham and Nome.
- Research promoting avalanche safety and making sea ice forecasting relevant and useful for rural communities.
- Monthly webinars bringing together hundreds of scientists, experts and practitioners to help solve complex problems related to rapid change in Alaska.
- Alaska’s Changing Environment report and its wildfire companion providing timely, reliable and understandable information about how Alaska is changing, impacts to humans, and ways to improve decision making.
- Work supporting community resilience and workforce development with resources for partnering with communities and our small grants program that helps regional non-profit organizations achieve their goals related to youth training, food security, hazard risk management, and economic development.
