Our approach in Alaska

Alaska’s environment is changing

Alaska is warming at over twice the rate of other parts of the globe. The intensity and frequency of extreme climate events related to temperature, sea ice and coastal erosion is also increasing. There is high confidence that these changes, along with shifts in precipitation, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, will continue in the future.

Rural communities throughout the state, many of which are accessible only by air or water, are among the most vulnerable. These communities face threats to key areas of concern such as food security, community infrastructure and traditional knowledge.

Throughout our work, we strive for authentic partnership between researchers, practitioners and communities at every stage of the research process. We are committed to producing actionable science that communities and state managers can use in planning and decision making.

We value research with, for and by Alaskans and are committed to creating a team composition that reflects the demographics of Alaska and includes lived experience in rural communities. This emphasis helps build community resilience and addresses the immediate needs of our state. ACCAP complies with community policies and regulations for research and respects local cultural and intellectual property ownership.
