Avalanche assessment and prediction in Alaska

Avalanche around two stories tall fully covers road with person wearing hi-vis vest standing at the bottom.

ACCAP continues to support the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Geological and Geophysical Surveys as they lay the groundwork for the state’s first avalanche warning system. This work includes several research efforts exploring ways to forecast and predict avalanches. One project explores the relationship between atmospheric rivers and avalanches — a necessary prerequisite for predicting avalanches from atmospheric rivers. A second project explored the usefulness of a tool called analog forecasting to improve predictions of extreme events in Alaska.
